  5. A number of eukaryotic  and  archaebacterial ribosomal proteins can be grouped
  6. on the basis of sequence similarities. One of these families consists of:
  7.  
  8.  - Vertebrates S17 [1].
  9.  - Drosophila S17 [2].
  10.  - Neurospora crassa S17 (crp-3).
  11.  - Yeast S17a (RP51A) and S17b (RP51B) [3].
  12.  
  13. These proteins  have  about  135 amino  acids  and  are  highly  conserved. We
  14. selected a  highly  charged cluster of residues located in the central part of
  15. these proteins, as a signature pattern.
